Beware of the Box
Most of the time when someone asks you to “think outside of the box” what they are really saying is “crawl inside my box with me.” That hardly seems like a model for innovation to me. I subscribe more to Roy Williams’ approach. Get outside of your box and kick it to the curb.
It is really quite liberating. Over the last few months I have been helping my team in Utah redraw the discussion in the rapid prototyping industry. They don’t know it yet (they sense something is coming) but tomorrow I go down to Springville, UT and unveil my plan to Alex Linde and a few others. General corporate unveiling will happen on Friday as we open our new bigger facility in Springville.
So, what is so great about what I have to announce. I cannot say much yet, but we are going to unleash a program that will:
1. Revitalize / repatriate manufacturing to the United States. Yes, there are good reasons for doing this…
2. Positively impact the environment by cleaning up manufacturing processes
3. Create good paying jobs
4. Improve productivity of corporate assets
Not bad for a pollitical conservative, eh?
This is world changing stuff. If the manufacturing sector had a 2.0 this would be it.
It would not have been possible with “out of the box” thinking. I am not going to give any more away at this point but stay tuned to this channel for future announcements.

Hi David,
As always (or almost always…;-), I’m intrigued. But how can a guy from the wiles of Ferndale make such a radical claim?
Think on that, and get back to me.
It’s true that the system (in fact, come to think of it, nearly ALL systems) is broken. But what about “JIT/Six Sigma/Demming? How are you going to improve on those integrations?
Oh: and having the COMMENTS link at the top, and in the same light gray as the rest makes it somewhat difficult to find. It took me 2 days to finally locate it to place this comment.
Best,

One more thing: What’s with the “Semi” to the Unleashed title?
I’ve never known you to be “semi” about anything…
Do tell.

Mark,
a) please design my new blog. Poem hates this template too. I figure if I hold out long enough someone with creative skills will step up and design something cool for me.
b) a lot of genius actually comes out of Ferndale. Remember PRWeb?
c) some of the processes you mention are patches to a broken system. instead of patching the system we are looking to rebuild it. something really revolutionary is about to happen. i just have to make sure that i can get all of the stars to line up correctly. if i can, this is going to be really nifty.
d) i added “semi” to my blog more as an acknowledgement and reminder that I still have people and parties that I have responsibility and stewardship for.
